ISO 639-1

ISO 639-1是國際標準化組織ISO 639語言編碼標準的第一部分。它含有 136 個兩字母的編碼，用來標示世界上主要的語言。這些代碼在很多地方都被用作語言的簡寫，例如：

• 英語（English）用en表示
• 德語（Deutsch）用de表示（Deutsch 是德語的本名）
• 日語（Japanese）用ja表示（儘管日語的拼音是 Nihongo）
• 汉语 使用zh表示，來自「中文」的漢語拼音: Zhōngwén

ISO 639-1在 2002年成為正式標準，但在之前的草擬階段已被使用多年。最後加進ISO 639-1的代碼是在2004年10月19日加入的si，代表僧加羅語。由1995年3月起，RFC 1766推薦使用本標準，而接着在2001年1月起的RFC 3066亦推薦使用本標準。Infoterm（International Information Center for Terminology）是ISO 639-1代碼的註冊機構。

New ISO 639-1 codes are not added if an ISO 639-2 code exists, so systems that use ISO 639-1 and 639-2 codes, with 639-1codes preferred, do not have to change existing codes.

"After the publication of ISO/DIS 639-1 as an International

Standard, no new 2-letter code shall be added to ISO 639-1 unless a

3-letter code is also added at the same time to ISO 639-2. In

addition, no language with a 3-letter code available at the time of

publication of ISO 639-1 which at that time had no 2-letter code

shall be subsequently given a 2-letter code."

If a ISO 639-2 code that covers a group of languages is used, it may still be obsoleted for some data by a new ISO 639-1 code.

Codes added after RFC publication in January 2001:

There is no specification on treatment of macrolanguages (see ISO 639-3).
